I’ve never been much of a baker but lately I’ve been trying my hand at a few things. I’ve made some bread, a very impressive (if I do say so myself) three-tiered chocolate cake, and buttermilk breakfast biscuits.
I thought it would be fun to try some baking for the dogs – that is, make my own dog treats. I had some sweet potatoes so I did some Googling to find a recipe. I found this one on the cooking blog Just a Pinch and decided to give it a try.
It’s a simple recipe – sweet potatoes, flour, cinnamon, oatmeal, and an egg. Mixed them together and got this:

The recipe said if it’s too wet to keep adding flour until it’s the right consistency. I had to add a LOT of flour. Maybe I was using a particularly large sweet potato. Finally it came together into a dough I could work with.

I rolled it out and used the only cookie cutter I have to cut out some tree-shaped dog cookies.

Unfortunately the dough was still too wet and the pieces stuck to the counter. I eventually gave up trying to remove the trees and just started hand-shaping pieces into different shapes.

Cooked them in the oven for 35 minutes and they came out looking… pretty much how they looked pre-bake. Except a few of the thinner pieces were a bit burnt.

I let them cool down and then gave them to my two taste testers to see what they thought:
The dogs LOVE them. They don’t care that they aren’t much to look at. Ranger has even been barking at the bowl of treats on the counter and then staring at me like, “HEY! GIVE ME THOSE TREATS!”
Was making my own dog treats less expensive than buying them? Probably not. Will I be doing this regularly? Nope. It was still a fun experience, though, and I’m sure I will share some more dog treat recipes in the future.
