I usually make something special for the dogs to enjoy on Thanksgiving – partly because I don’t want them to be left out of the festivities but mostly to keep them occupied while we enjoy our meal! This year I thought it would be fun to make some cute little pumpkin pup-pies for the dogs this Thanksgiving. I scoured the internet for an easy recipe and found a bunch of really cute ones.
Then I lost steam and decided not to make them.
Instead I made pie “filling” using pumpkin puree, sweet potatoes, fat-free plain yogurt, rolled oats, and some crunchy cheese training treats. I made two different batches:
DOG TREAT FILLING BATCH ONE

It looks kind of pretty, doesn’t it? I mixed it all together into a far less pretty concoction and stuffed a variety of the dogs’ rubber toys with the filling.

DOG TREAT FILLING BATCH TWO
The second batch includes some pumpkin puree, a bunch of sweet potatoes, rolled oats, and yogurt.

This batch was much denser which made stuffing the bones with it really easy. Occasionally I’ll buy these marrow bones for the dogs and once they’ve cleaned them of all meat and marrow I re-use them by filling them with other types of goodies.

Then I put everything into the freezer. Freezing the treats helps them last longer – otherwise the dogs would be done with these in just a few minutes.

Note I put the rubber toys into a container – the pumpkin batch was messier and I didn’t want to get it all over my freezer shelf. I put the extra filling I had left over into two small plastic containers (you can see them there on the right behind the bone). I’ll give these containers to the dogs as well (lids off, of course). If you use containers like this for dog ice cream, or filling like this one, you’ll want to keep an eye on your dog. My dogs do really well with the containers until there is nothing tasty left inside – then Grizzly goes to town chewing on it. You’ll want to take the container away right when they’ve finished with it or you’ll be out a container. Learned that lesson the hard way!
