Finding the right diet for your dog can be a tricky game of trial and error. Every dog is different – I used to feed my two Aussiedoodles the same kibble and one of them was always constipated and the other was always having overly soft stool or diarrhea. It was frustrating.
For awhile I fed them a grain-free kibble but then FDA warnings came out about grain-free dog food leading to heart disease. The kibble I fed them was on their list of brands that had led to cases of heart disease so it was time to find another option. I did some more research around this and the grain-free dog diet phenomenon and learned that grains are not bad for dogs – unless they have a legitimate grain allergy (here’s a good article about the whole thing if you’re interested in learning more).
So now I feed them a combination of Wellness Complete Health Deboned Chicken & Oatmeal kibble and Tylee’s Human Grade Turkey Recipe Frozen Dog Food two times a day – once in the morning and once at night. Since changing to this diet both my dogs are having regular and healthy poops – sorry for the TMI!

Of course that’s not all they get! My two spoiled Aussiedoodles also get a variety of treats.
We regularly give them Greenies Dental Treats to keep their teeth clean and white (I don’t mean to brag but people have commented on how nice my dogs’ teeth are – just sayin’). They love them!
We like to use Cloud Star Tricky Trainers Crunchy Treats as training treats. They are small and the dogs love them. If you’re trying them for the first time I recommend this three pack so your dog can try all three flavors – but we generally just buy the cheddar flavor ones.
If you go to Trader Joe’s you’ve probably seen these salmon jerky treats there before. They stink but the dogs love them and they fit really nicely into one of their favorite treat dispensing toys – the indestructible pickle. If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s nearby you can buy them on Amazon here.
Occasionally, especially when we need them to be occupied for a few minutes, we give them cow tracheas to chew on. We never leave them alone with this treat, though! They could choke on it if consumed too quickly (looking at you, Ranger) so you should always be present while your dog enjoys this treat.
We also give them marrow-filled bones when we want to keep them busy for awhile. These, while kinda gross, are great because they enjoy eating the marrow and meat off of them and once they’ve cleaned them of everything tasty we reuse them! We fill them with peanut butter or some other food item, freeze them, and then give them to the dogs to work on. It’s very cost effective and the bones last forever.
We do often get them other kinds of treats but these are our frequent go-to dog treats. What dog treats do your dogs love? Let me know in a comment below!
Note: I may receive a small compensation when you buy something on Amazon through these links. It helps pay for all the dog treats. Thanks!
