Birthday Week Day 8: Dog Birthday Cake

Today is the last day of my dogs’ birthday week! It also happens to be Grizzly’s actual birthday. Today he is three years old! Can you believe it? My baby got so big.

He’s transformed over the years from this tiny adorable puppy:

Into this handsome young man:

Since this is the last day of birthday treats we’re going out with a bang!

I bought this Puppy Cake Mix Dog Birthday Cake Kit  to try out. I wasn’t super excited to spend $20 on a dog cake mix kit but I couldn’t help myself – and I figured I’ll use the bone-shaped pan for more dog cakes in the future.

This kit comes in five different flavors – banana, carob, peanut butter, pumpkin, and red velvet. I decided to play it safe and picked the peanut butter flavor.

Making this dog cake was a lot like making any out-of-the-box cake. I added one egg, some vegetable oil, water, and mixed it all up. Then I sprayed the bone-shaped cake pan with some Baker’s Delight spray to keep the cake from sticking (per the instructions on the box). Poured the batter into the pan and baked it!

I flipped the cake over to get it out of the pan and have the nice flat uncracked side up. I added a little extra water to the frosting mix and poured it over the top of the cake more like a ganache than a frosting. Much easier and no chance of ripping the cake with a spatula while applying thick frosting. I think it turned out pretty good!

Admittedly the dogs didn’t seem to know what to do with the pieces of cake I put in their food bowls for them. They sniffed at it and then gave me a “what the #$%^ is this?” look.

So I ended up having to hand-feed it to them – my spoiled babies.

So ends birthday week in quarantine!
