We don’t usually get a Christmas tree – mostly because we are often traveling over the holiday so don’t see much of a point. This year, thanks to the pandemic, we aren’t going anywhere so decided to cheer ourselves up a little bit by getting a Christmas tree.
Christmas trees and pets famously don’t get along, so I was a little nervous about getting one.
Would the dogs pee on it because it’s a tree?
Would they try to take the ornaments off?
Would they drink the tree water or eat the pine needles?
So many things to worry about. I figured out a compromise, though, that I’m pretty happy with.
We have pretty low ceilings so getting a tall tree wasn’t really in the cards anyway, and the bigger the tree the bigger the price tag. So we went to our local nursery and purchased a smaller sized tree. I bought a pretty, heavy, pot to put it in from Amazon (this one, actually) and filled it with rocks to keep the tree standing up straight. I then put the whole thing on top of a little coffee table we have. Here’s the result:

The dogs can’t drink the water because it’s in a pot well above their heads and so are the ornaments and tree itself. Safe from any doggy interference.

Now my dogs are generally well behaved and on the calmer side. They’ve even left their gifts untouched! But I can easily imagine more energetic, rambunctious dogs totally destroying this whole thing simply by jumping up on the coffee table or grabbing one of the lower hanging ornaments. It’s not a perfect solution, but it has worked really well for us so far!
