Salt Creek Recreation Area

After multiple coworkers recommended Salt Creek Recreation Area I made a reservation for a long weekend in October. It’s a super popular area so if you want to go I suggest reserving far in advance.

Our campsite was right on a cliff was a stunning view of the water. I took this photo at dusk when we first arrived so not the best shot, but the view really was beautiful and we had a good time looking for sea creatures in the waves from our picnic table.

There were multiple stairs down to the rock beach riddled with tide pools to explore at low tide. We left the dogs in the trailer when we explored these areas – the rocks are covered in sharp barnacles and broken shells which would have hurt their paws.

There are also hiking trails around, we didn’t have a lot of time so we chose a short one that was part of Striped Peak (see map).

It was an easy trail with a diversion down to a rocky beach cove we explored. The dogs enjoyed all the sniffs:

While we were there it just so happened to be Crab Fest in Port Angeles. We drove into town on one of the days to check it out and eat some crab. Even with covid the place was PACKED with people. It was entirely outdoors and the line for the crab meal stretched multiple blocks. We’re not line people so we got a little sneaky and went over to the drive thru pick up spot (no lines) and asked if we could just buy a crab from them. It was cooked but cold and there was no hot butter or sides but we still enjoyed it immensely! Way better than waiting in that horrible line.

We checked out the market and bought a very nice alpaca blanket and some Sequim honey.

The whole weekend was off-and-on rain, so not the most pleasant but can’t expect anything else in October. I suggest going during a warmer month if you can but if you can’t we still had a good time despite the rain.

Salt Creek Campground was one of the most beautiful campgrounds we’ve stayed at and I totally recommend it – just keep your dogs off the tide pools and shell-strewn beach.
