Camping at Alta Lake State Park in Washington

We spent Memorial Day Weekend at Alta Lake State Park this year. It’s located in eastern Washington a bit north of Chelan. It’s a pretty quick drive over from Seattle if you don’t hit traffic.

There are two loops at this campground, one close to the lake and one a short walk from the lake. There are some gorgeous tent sites right on the water but the RV sites in that loop are basically just a parking lot.

I chose a site in the second loop, a little further from the lake but just a short walk to it. We had some pretty nice views from our site (when our neighbor didn’t park his truck right next to our site blocking it).

The big attraction is of course the lake and the activities you can do on it. There’s also a nice little swimming beach, unfortunately dogs are not allowed on the beach so we were unable to enjoy it.

There was one hike I could find a trail to walkable from the campground, but it was in the 80s and the trail appeared to go straight up with little shade cover. The dogs were already panting and I didn’t want to push them too hard so I opted not to do it.

There is a nice walking path that runs behind the campground and to the river so we did that instead. It’s flat, not very long, and provided some nice views.

We explored the area during our stay at Alta Lake State Park – we went to two wineries, the first of which (Lone Point Cellars) had super fun swing benches and stunning views. Also dog-friendly and very accommodating.

The second winery, Rio Vista Wines, we’ve actually been to before. It often has live music (it did both times we went) and a large grassy area to sit and watch while you enjoy a glass of wine. It’s right on the river and some people come by boat!

While I hung out at the campsite my husband enjoyed a round of golf at the super close (we’re talking one minute drive) Alta Lake Golf Course.

The Alta Lake State Park campground offers a lot of activities and is very family-friendly, but not very dog-friendly. The sites were basically on top of each other so we had no privacy and the dogs were bothered a lot by people around us. Tip: book one of the sites on the very outer rim of the loop. Those sites actually do have some privacy and are very nice.

We won’t be returning to Alta Lake State Park but it was a fun little weekend trip.
