When we got Ranger I couldn’t walk more than five feet without someone stopping me to ask questions and pet him. The photo of him as a puppy above probably explains why: he was seriously the most stupidly adorable puppy ever created. Hands-down, no contest, the cutest.
He’s always been a bit nervous, unsure of things. He’s suspicious of new people and startles easily. He has eyes people refer to as “human eyes” and sometimes makes people uncomfortable with his stare. People often say, when talking about the differences in Ranger and Grizzly, “Grizzly is a dog’s dog. He does all the things dogs are supposed to do. Ranger…Ranger is…a human.”
You’d have to meet him to fully understand it – but the way he looks at you feels like he’s completely on your level intellectually and if it weren’t for this damn language barrier we’d be able to properly communicate.

We got Grizzly almost exactly one year after we got Ranger. Ranger loved other dogs, and was beginning to bum us out by all his depressed moping. We thought if we got him a friend he’d be happier. That’s right, we got a dog for our dog.
Grizzly came from the same breeder we got Ranger, and after creating a small dog family tree we realized they are related! They are cousins.
From the first day we realized how different Grizzly was from Ranger. He was a happier, more carefree puppy. He loved playing in water and getting dirty, adored all people, and was obsessed with cuddling with us. He’s a clown – always chasing his tail and flopping over for belly rubs.
