Walton Lake and John Day Fossil Beds were the second stop on our road trip from Seattle to Reno.
John Day Fossil Beds
After seeing stunning photos of the Painted Hills of John Day Fossil Beds I wanted to go to see them in person. These days photos are really manipulated and color-corrected so a lot of the time it seems like the real place is a far cry from the photos you see of them. The Painted Hills fit into this category. They were still beautiful and I’m glad we went but they were not in person what they looked like in the photos I had seen. Below you can see my photos of what it really looks like, no photoshopping.
It was really hot out there so we didn’t stay long, the dogs were ready to go five minutes after we got there. Luckily it doesn’t take long at all to walk through them.
Walton Lake Campground
While we were visiting John Day Fossil Beds we stayed at a campground at Walton Lake. It was really beautiful – our site was right on the lake with a great view. A trail circles the lake, so we walked that a couple times while we were there and saw quite a few ducks and – less cute – snakes. The snakes were harmless but still startled me every time we came across one.
So far this is one of my favorite dog friendly campgrounds – and it was really easy to park our trailer in the site, too.
